I was planning a group ride not too long ago, and one of my friends reminded me to keep an eye on the weather, as not too many people would come on a casual Saturday ride if the weather was really bad.

Above: OK, so maybe the roads here in North Carolina won’t look like this, but it might get a little chilly.
So, what can you do to make winter riding more enjoyable? I was digging around and found one of Phillip’s columns from a while back titled “Proper dress key to wintertime cycling“.
Here’s an excerpt:
A lot of cyclists hang up their bikes this time of year and either turn to other sports to get them through the winter or just soften up around the middle. But, for those of us who either don’t want to or can’t give up cycling for even a few months, we really don’t have to.
He goes on to mention ways to stay warm and give tips on riding in colder weather. Read the rest of this entry »
I had a busy week, and I had been planning on doing a ride with the cycling club at school on Saturday. That didn’t work out, but I was able to go on a short ride with my brother and Dustin.
When we left, we weren’t sure where we wanted to ride. We started out riding towards Woodcroft. We all had to be back by 3:30, and by the time we were at Woodcroft it was about 2:20. So, we decided to ride the Tobacco Trail for half an hour or so and then start heading home.

The weather was supposed to be really chilly, but when we were riding, about mid-afternoon, the weather was fine. It was about 65 with a slight breeze. I wore a long-sleeve shirt and it was warm enough.

We rode the Tobacco Trail almost all the way to the Durham Bulls ballpark, but we turned around when we were a few blocks away. I had a nice ride, and we got back at 3:20 (nice timing!). We weren’t riding at top speed, but I rode enough to get my heart pumping by the time I was back. :) I think we rode about 14 miles.
Road signs

I saw a link at Go Clipless to a post on Stuart Brown’s weblog, Angry Cyclist. The post is titled “5 road signs that don’t exist, but should”.

Above: Road signs, left to right: Glass shards ahead, No overtaking bikes, Car doors are in operation in this area.

Above: Road signs, left to right: Vehicles parked in cycle lane ahead, Now entering bicycle theft zone.
I thought it was a funny because it points out the completely different perspective that you have when you are on a bike. :) Be sure check out the original post.
