I was planning a group ride not too long ago, and one of my friends reminded me to keep an eye on the weather, as not too many people would come on a casual Saturday ride if the weather was really bad.

Above: OK, so maybe the roads here in North Carolina won’t look like this, but it might get a little chilly.
So, what can you do to make winter riding more enjoyable? I was digging around and found one of Phillip’s columns from a while back titled “Proper dress key to wintertime cycling“.
Here’s an excerpt:
A lot of cyclists hang up their bikes this time of year and either turn to other sports to get them through the winter or just soften up around the middle. But, for those of us who either don’t want to or can’t give up cycling for even a few months, we really don’t have to.
He goes on to mention ways to stay warm and give tips on riding in colder weather. Here are some highlights:
1. Dress in layers and start out cold (as you will warm up quickly)
2. Wear a good pair of fingered gloves and make sure your feet stay warm. He suggests creating a wind barrier for your shoes (think: gaiters)
3. Wear a vest or light fleece jacket
4. Tights (you can wear them under your shorts) will keep your legs warm
5. Make sure you have working front and rear lights (this is important in all weather)
It has been chilly outside during the last few days, so I think that the weather is finally getting closer to what it should be this time of year. Here in North Carolina, I think riding is possible throughout most of the winter months. And yes, it’s just going to get colder! Many people don’t like this kind of weather, and like Phillip said, they think that it’s a time to take a break from cycling. Personally, I like the cold, and I hope to continue riding, although not as frequently. ;)
These are great tips, and I’m glad I found the article. If you are dressed properly and prepared, then riding will be much more comfortable.
