Ski slopes + mountain biking?
on February 6th, 2007

While I was in the mountains skiing not too long ago, I noticed that a handful of ski resorts offered mountain biking in the summer.
I was browsing the web and found this article about the risks of biking at ski areas. I read it more as background than as an assessment of the risks. It reported that approximately “158 NSAA member resorts reported having mountain bike trails at their areas, while 85 offer lift-serviced trails”. Well, I guess that’s more than a handful.
Does anyone have any experience with this? I thought it was an interesting concept. Would you go mountain biking on a ski slope?

I am a West Virginia native and can say that at Snowshoe, the riding there is better in the summer than the skiing in the winter. Lifts on the terrain park on one side of the mountain, and a shuttle that services the downhill runs on the other. Cupp Run is the name most people know it by, however, I know it as “the really steep big hill with huge natural features that you should not ride with a hardtail if you can help it.” I could not help it actually and had a blast trying to clear everything.
Also, if you want more beautiful scenery, go to the Canaan Valley area. Timberline has been working on getting their mtb program going and has had success in recent years. If you’re looking for local knowledge head over to Blackwater Bikes in Davis and they will hook you up with someone to ride with.
Overall, come to WV to ride and you won’t go wrong.
